Ohio Wesleyan University takes immense pride in the sense of community and the connection between students, faculty, alumni, and the entire town of Delaware. The University looks forward to welcoming locals and visitors from afar to share traditions, athletics, and the foundations of Delaware County. An opportunity for OWU to showcase this important community aspect, they hold a biannual celebration known as Bishop Backers Day.
Held once in the winter and once in the fall, Bishop Backers Day serves as a time for all to support OWU athletics, all while giving back to the county and local community. This winter’s event took place on February 14, 2026, in Branch Rickey and Gordon Field House, featuring a basketball double-header as the Bishops faced Wooster. Anyone could attend with the donation of a canned good that was given to the Delaware County Hunger Alliance. Last winter, Bishop Backers Day, the community had the privilege of donating the collected $600 and 671 pounds of food.
Along with the games, an expo was held in Gordon Field House, which was filled with local businesses and non-profit organizations. The line-up this February included police officers alongside the firefighters who taught free CPR lessons, children's activities courteous to Delaware YMCA, and a raffle hosted by CommonWealth Bank for some exciting prizes! More booths were expected, and they sure came!
In previous years, the Columbus Zoo has brought in some beloved animals to educate on their conservation efforts, and the Delaware Humane Society has brought puppies available for adoption, or just for cuddles and kisses. Downtown stores and vendors have also participated in promoting their business.
The intention behind all the details that OWU put into the event proves how the university helps strengthen the bonds between the campus and the local community. There is no better way to give back and celebrate the town than by bringing those who make it up. Bishop Backers Day resembles the heart of the campus and the relationship of Delaware residents.
