Student-Made Spotlight: Kailey Sweet

Students have the advantage.

Student loan debt, housing costs, car payments, and potential dependents all pile up on young adults after graduation. These responsibilities can form stifling environments for alumni pursuing new and risky ventures.

Many students are free of bills and financial burdens, which supports the common college motif of exploring interests and career possibilities.

Student-Made is partnering with OWU to give artists and creatives the opportunity to own their own business in this valuable time to take risks. Student-Made also simplifies entrepreneurship by covering mundane start-up tasks and costs such as sales tax, website building, shipping, and sales reports.

OWU’s Student-Made Store opened on September 14th and is giving students and alumni the opportunity to support the passions and artistry of their fellow students.

OWU junior Kailey Sweet is using Student-Made to continue building her painting and sticker business, Kailey Ann Art.

Sweet has been drawing since she was young, and in high school she started selling her creations in a consignment store near her home.

“I decided to become an entrepreneur because I loved making art and wanted to see if other people would like my work.”

Through Student-Made, Sweet is excited to experiment with selling her art in different formats.

“In the past it was really hard for me to sell art because I couldn’t sell a painting for a price that seemed reasonable for the time the piece took. But selling prints and stickers of my paintings in addition to the painting itself has made it far more worthwhile!”

From motivational and inspirational quotes to paintings of scenery and your favorite television characters, Sweet looks forward to sharing her art with the OWU community and bringing joy to campus.

Although she started selling art years ago, Sweet chose to create her brand, Kailey Ann Art, this summer.

“I have always loved art, and recently I decided I wanted to create my own art brand. I started working on this goal over the summer but really had no idea how to enhance the visibility of my work. And then I heard about Student Made from a friend.”

“Student Made for me is the perfect way to get my brand started! The program has already helped me so much by walking me through the steps required to successfully sell my art!”

Sweet’s art can be found on studentmadeowu.com. In-person Pop-Up sales events will be sprinkled throughout the semester and advertised on the Student-Made OWU Instagram.
