A bouncier surface and quicker start to the season have come with the upgraded indoor track in Gordon Field House, giving the women’s track and field team all the confidence they need for the season. Home to tennis, baseball, softball, and the track and field squad, all are grateful for the facilities transformation. From new and improved lighting to better-designed surfaces, all athletes can now train and compete to their greatest potential.
As each spring sport gears up to return or continue on with their competitions, the track team is motivated to come out hard. With incoming freshmen and returners, the indoor season has brought insight into what the rest may look like. With the addition of the new track, OWU is now able to host more home meets, but all in all, the amount of dedication and practice is shown anywhere.
This past month, OWU hosted the Red & Black meet, which brought in over 100 track and field alumni to meet or even compete against current athletes. Shortly after, a tri-meet was held where the women's team brought home first with a total of 151 points across running and field events. The OWU Open was held on Friday, February 13, ahead of the All-Ohio meet that Saturday, in which the girls' team brought home the first-place plaque, and then a week later, on the 20th, the OWU Tune-up will occur.
“I have high hopes for this season - the dedication from my teammates and the team chemistry will prove what we have in store. Each event has its strength, and I can't wait to see the outcome,” sprinter and jumper Amarah McPhaul ‘27 exclaimed. With a conference title in sight, OWU’s rivals, DePauw and Wittenberg, are all battling to hold the trophy high.
Because of the coach's vision and the generous funding from the Ferguson family, the team can now utilize the new facility to its full potential. McPhaul added that “everyone is excited and loves the new track; it has been very beneficial for training and how we are preparing for not only our upcoming competitions but also the outdoor season.”
