Women's Softball Team puts the Student in Student Athlete

Practices, lifts, and games fill their schedule, but members of the Ohio Wesleyan University softball team know what’s important: academics.

Softball Coach Cassie Cunningham emphasizes the importance of academics to all her players. Cunningham expects the players to prioritize being a student. She monitors her team’s academic progress. If the player on her team is below a 2.5 GPA, the student athlete will have designated study times.

“You came here to be a student first, not an athlete. You are paying for this education.”

As the spring pre-season begins, the players are learning how to balance softball practices, individual practices with the coaches, team lifts, and classes. Freshman Ryla Zehring and Junior Rylea Gist describe balancing academics and softball as challenging.

“Balancing softball and academics took some time to figure out the best method,” Zehring said.

“I think that balancing school and softball is a challenge, and it took a few weeks to get used to,” Gist added.

Both players learn how to manage their time with schoolwork and the softball season. Zehring and Gist had designated times to work on homework to lessen the stress of balancing academics and sports.

“I really had to prioritize my time more efficiently and plan out times to do my homework,” said Zehring. “Some days are harder and more stressful than others. However, it gets easier the more I plan out time for my homework.”

Gist had a similar experience.

“I had to make sure to schedule specific times to do my homework to make sure it gets done, and I still have time for softball.”

Balancing became more important as the team prepares for its annual spring trip to Florida, March 7-15, where the Bishops will play up to 14 games. With March arriving, the players are working ahead on assignments.

“I am a little stressed about academics with the upcoming Florida trip, only because I want to make sure I get all of my homework and projects completed,” Zehring said.

“However, I’m sure I will be productive and use my time wisely to get everything done on time.”

“I am excited for Florida and have already started working on assignments due around then so that I can focus on softball and making memories with my teammates during our trip!” said Gist.

Success is not only measured by the number of wins the team has, but also by the performance in the classes.
