Over the past few weeks, the Ice Bucket Challenge has picked up steam again, but this time, it is raising awareness for a different cause. A mental health needs club at the University of South Carolina has come together to ignite the flame of the popular internet trend.
Ten years ago, the Ice Bucket Challenge swept the internet by raising awareness and money towards a cure for ALS. The concept is simple: Post a video of you pouring ice water over your head and nominate a few people to do the same.
Founder of USC Mind, Wade Jefferson, has put together an incredible social media campaign that encourages students to be mindful of their mental health and open to supporting others. Using the same tactic that has worked in the past, the USC mind group has been able to pick up some steam with an Ice Bucket Challenge of their own.
This trend has even caught on at OWU, as numerous athletes from the Men’s Lacrosse and Women’s Soccer teams have posted on social media participating in the challenge. Along with the USC Mind challenge, OWU sports teams often also honor Morgan’s Message, which is a foundation to end the stigma surrounding athletes’ mental health.
With finals week just around the corner and the semester coming to an end, take time out of your day to reset yourself. This is an incredibly stressful time of the year, with lots of question marks surrounding each day going forward. It is important for all OWU students to keep in mind the importance of their mental health, especially in such a pivotal time as these next couple of weeks.
