When people talk about what makes Ohio Wesleyan University special, they often mention the academics, campus tradition, or close community. But a big part of the OWU experience comes from the staff and faculty who support students every day.
For many students, that support shows up in simple but meaningful ways. It can be someone taking time to listen when things feel overwhelming, offering guidance during a stressful decision, or just checking in to make sure a student is okay. These everyday moments often go unnoticed, but they play a huge role in helping students feel grounded, supported, and connected to campus.
That support was celebrated at a recent luncheon honoring the 2025 SPARK and STAR Award winners, along with staff and faculty members reaching milestone anniversaries this year.
The Spark and STAR Awards recognize employees who go out of their way to help students and strengthen the OWU community. Many of the stories shared during the luncheon focused on how simple acts, such as checking in, offering guidance, or just being present with, can have a lasting impact on students.
One person recognized was Doug Koyle, who has helped many students during stressful or uncertain moments. Students share how his support helped them calm down, understand their options, and move forward with more confidence. For some students, that reassurance helped them feel like they belonged. For others, it was a reminder that someone at OWU truly cares.
“Sometimes all you need is someone to listen and remind you that you’re not alone,” said one student. Having staff members like Doug Koyle makes a huge difference, especially when things feel overwhelming.”
In addition to the award winners, the luncheon also recognized faculty and staff celebrating milestone work anniversaries in 2025. These milestones represent years of dedication to OWU and to the students who have come through campus over time. Many of these individuals have quietly supported students for years without seeking recognition.
The event was hosted by the OWU Staff Council and the Office of Human Resources, bringing together people from different parts of campus to celebrate their shared commitment to students. While students often see professors in class, this event highlighted how many people work behind the scenes to make the campus feel supportive and welcoming.
President Matt vandenBerg also spoke at the luncheon, thanking staff and faculty for their continued dedication. He expressed appreciation not only for the work they do, but for the way they do it–with care and professionalism.
“Thank you for the people you are, the professionals you are,” vandenBerg said, “Thank you for the work you do, and thank you for the way in which you do that work.”
For the students, this kind of support plays a major role in their college experience. Advisors, staff members, and faculty who take time to help students can make challenging moments feel more manageable. Those relationships often leave a lasting impression long after students leave campus.
The luncheon served as a reminder that OWU is more than just a place to take classes. It is a community shaped by people who genuinely care about students' well-being. Whether through awards or years of service, the staff and faculty recognized continue to make OWU feel like home.
