Ohio Wesleyan Hosts Annual Student Art Show

Ohio Wesleyan University students showcased their artwork on February 6, 2025 at the annual student art show and ceremony.

The selection process for the showcase and receiving an award is very straightforward. Professors encourage selected students to submit their artwork to a three-person panel that makes the final decisions.

It’s challenging to decide to put your work out in the open. Rhys McCain, a sophomore at Ohio Wesleyan University, talks about her process and experience with her work being a part of the art show.  She had a few words of wisdom for students that are struggling with sharing their art with others.

“It can be scary at first but just do it. You have nothing to lose. You are the one enjoying your art and never afraid to ask your professor for feedback on any project,” McCain said.

A good majority of students attended in support of their friends and peers. Téa Ilic and Willow Brown, both sophomores at OWU, came to support friends, socialize, and to appreciate art. One of Ilic's favorite pieces that won best in show was “A plea to be normal” by August Lemert.

Lemert’s piece was a ceramic medium and three tiles, vertically positioned on the wall. The tile in the middle was a girl looking into a mirror, and the outer tiles had the words “Personality, Comparison, Destroys.” This piece won “Best in Show.” Ilic thinks the piece holds a lot of truth and it’s very relatable.  She talks about what makes her most excited about the art show.

“I love art and am excited to see how people around me express themselves through different mediums.”

Professor Jeff Nilan of the OWU Art department expresses why this event is significant and makes him excited every year.

“It’s amazing to see students bringing their families, and it’s all good positive energy in this space.” Nilan says.

The art show was made successful by creative student artists and their peers that show their support.
