With the first snow of the season arriving in Delaware, Ohio Wesleyan University students are beginning to adjust to winter weather on campus. Snow and ice can make getting to class and around campus more challenging, but with a few preparations, it’s easy to stay safe and comfortable during the colder months.
Dress for the Weather
Temperatures in central Ohio can drop quickly once winter begins. Students are encouraged to wear warm, layered clothing and invest in reliable winter gear, such as waterproof boots, gloves, hats, and insulated coats. Proper footwear is especially important when walking on icy sidewalks or through slush.
Be Cautious on Walkways
OWU’s Buildings and Grounds crews work to keep sidewalks and entryways salted and cleared, but slippery areas can still appear during heavy snowfall or overnight freezes. It’s best to stick to cleared paths, walk carefully on hills and steps, and give yourself extra time to reach class safely.
Stay Warm Between Classes
There are plenty of indoor spaces across campus for students to warm up between classes, including Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, Slocum Hall, and the Bishop Café. Taking short breaks indoors helps prevent exposure to cold temperatures and wind.
Enjoy the Season
While winter weather can be inconvenient, it also brings unique opportunities to enjoy campus in a different way. Many students take advantage of the first snow to enjoy the scenery, take photos, or spend time outdoors before temperatures drop further.
As winter settles in, staying prepared, cautious, and aware can help ensure a safe and enjoyable season for everyone on campus.
