Mastering Time Management as a College Student

How many times a day do you remind yourself of everything you must do? College can be one of the most challenging periods of your life, but why is that? The primary reason is that during these years, you learn a great deal about yourself and the art of time management.

Time management is a concept that has been emphasized throughout our entire lives. However, it is not until we truly acknowledge and understand it ourselves that meaningful change occurs. In college, the demands of academic responsibilities, social interactions, and personal growth often converge, making it essential to prioritize effectively.

Consider the case of Paige Orlando, a junior at Ohio Wesleyan. Paige is an active member of the Tri-Delt Sorority and works as a gymnastics coach. Her day begins with morning classes, followed by sorority meetings and events in the afternoon. Paige’s ability to balance her academic workload, sorority commitments, and coaching duties showcases her exceptional time management skills and dedication.

“Once I realized to just be in the moment of what I planned at that time, it made me more productive and helped me stay on task because of commitment.”

Alex Cercena, an Ohio University graduate and current law student at Ohio State University, believes balance is the key to success.

“It is the most time-consuming part of my life, but that doesn’t mean I change what makes me happy. I continue to make time for other parts of my life and I have a good understanding of the balance I need.”

Despite the demanding maturity of her studies, Cercena meticulously manages her time to excel academically while also engaging in extracurricular activities such as traveling and spending time with family and friends. Her dedication to her studies and her ability to balance various commitments highlight the importance of effective time management in achieving academic and personal success.

Payton Boerner, a senior at Ohio Wesleyan studying finance. emphasizes how she embraces the fact that college is an okay time to make mistakes. She uses time management by breaking her day into focused segments.

“I know that everything doesn’t have to be perfect. I allocate specific times for study, social activities, and self-care. This way, I’m able to maintain a healthy balance and learn from my experiences without overwhelming myself.”

Boerners’s approach to time management underscores the importance of flexibility and resilience in navigating college life while still maintaining a high level of productivity and personal growth.

The ability to manage time efficiently is not just about organizing tasks: it’s about making informed decisions that best utilize your time. The next time you are faced with two decisions, consider which option will help you manage your time more effectively. This approach not only helps in achieving academic success but also ensures a balanced and fulfilling college experience.

In conclusion, mastering time management during college is crucial. It allows for personal development, academic excellence, and a healthier lifestyle. So take control of your time, make thoughtful decisions, and pave the way for a successful future.
